Located on the grounds of the world-class St. Louis Zoo, the Orthwein Animal Nutrition Center provides world-class food storage and preparation facilities. Designed by the St. Louis architectural firm of Fox Architects, the building embraces sustainable "green" design concepts including a sloping green roof and native planted gardens. LEED certification of the building through the US Green Building Council will be pursued by the Owner.
Farnsworth Group's role as the civil engineering subconsultant was to provide all site related design including grading, pavements, stormwater runoff, utilities and a submersible sanitary grinder pump for basement restrooms and floor drains. Farnsworth's role also included a study of truck access movements to the facility's loading docks and coordination of security gate design widths to accommodate the trucks. The location available for the new facility adjoining the Vet Hospital was very tight and congested with utilities. Farnsworth helped the architect with siting the building footprint and access drive to avoid relocation of major utilities.
